"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass....it's about learning how to dance in the rain!" ---Vivian Greene

Did you know that when hauling your horse 75 miles or out of state, several different types of paperwork are required to accompany you. A health certificate from your veterinarian states that the horse has no communicable diseases noted at the time of the exam. These are only good for 30 days from date of issue. A Coggins or EIA negative test is required when transporting out of state. Depending on the state, this certificate is good for 6 months to one year.

It is also a good idea to have a Coggins done when buying or selling an equine. ( EIA is a viral disease for which there is no vaccine or cure. It is now known that it is spread by horseflies that bite an infected horse and transmit to a healthy one.
This disease occurs wherever horseflies live although it is seen more often in the southern states.) The third item in your horses travel bag is a brand inspection paper or permanent travel card. The State Patrol can stop you and ask to see this. Without it you can be fined $250 per animal. Also, without a Coggins your horse could be stopped until a negative test is run!

Morningstar Ranch requires for all borders and guest horses to have a coggins test not older than 6 month, brandinspection papers and the horses have to be current on shots and worming.

It All Begins On the Ground - Horse training starts with establishing a bond of trust and   safety

Many people are not wearing hats or gloves and unfortunately probably will not do so until they have had an accident. A lot of the horses are being worked without boots. Their owners know their own horses and are obviously prepared to take the risk of injury. There are too many accidents to horses and those who work with them. Think ahead, take precautions to protect yourself and your horse from accidents caused by carelessness!

Poetry by Jean Hennen

GOD MADE ME WILD
God made me wild, He made me free,
Won't you please understand me?
He gave me the instinct to survive,
Said flee from danger to stay alive.
You're good to eat, I made prey animals too.
There’s lots of variety in my creative zoo.
If something alarms you, don't you stay.
On hooves of steel make your getaway.
Please understand I have it in my mind, You humans are ones of those predator kind.
I can't change my nature, He made me so.
If we're going to get along, you must adapt to me, you know.
We could go like the wind together across a grassy sea
If only you'd try to understand me.
I don't speak English so you have to speak "horse."
It’s your body language I understand, of course.
Some folks understand this, if everyone would,
My life with you would be as it should.
Give me your love, show me you care,
Only then can we truly share.
God made me wild, He made me free,
Won't you please understand me?

BONDING AND INTIMACY
The touch, where is that spot?
The search, ah, you found it, thanks a lot.
Stroking under the tail, hand covering my eye,
You've blocked out the world, it’s just you and I.
You care about me, I know that you do.
You gave to me, I'll give to you

LOVING THE HORSE
Loving the horse not for what he can give to you,
But for what you can give to him.
Now you can move in spirit as one.

IF IT WERE ALL UP TO ME
(Sara Alfano, eleven years old)

If it were all up to me
The poor would have riches
And the blind man would see
The hungry would eat
And the weak would be strong
And the people with hatred would all get along
The ones who are greedy would start to share
And unfriendly people would start to care
The thirsty would drink
And the deaf person hear
And sorrow and sadness would all disappear
And that is how the world would be
If it were all up to me
